What is High Level English Conversation?

This course is for students with a good level of English ability, who wish to improve their conversation skills. Students learn many words and phrases at Junior High and High School but they are often not able to use this vocabulary freely or effectively in everyday, natural settings. The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to talk, at length, with confidence about matters which interest them. The focus of the classes is communication, with a lot of time given for conversation, discussion and the sharing of thoughts and opinions. The classes are conducted almost entirely in English and students are encouraged to speak freely on a wide range of topics.

An Example class.: Week 10. Group discussion 'The wife and the lover.'

Students are told a short story with 5 main characters. At the end of the story the students must rank the characters according to who is most to blame for the result of the story.

Once they have individually produced their own ranking the students form pairs and, through discussion and exchange of ideas, produce a pair ranking.

Depending on the number of students in the class they may then make groups of four or six or eight, and repeat the process above.

Other activities:

  1. Each student or group of students represents one of the characters and has to answer questions form the other students in a 'hot-seat' format.
  2. Students role play various scenes from the story.
  3. The class becomes a courtroom with a judge and jury and each 'character' is interviewed. Followed by a vote.
  4. Students become reporters in a news broadcast, explaining the events of the story.
